The America That Once Was
We rarely get a chance to see another country’s editorial about the USA. Recently, I was reminded of this piece found in an excerpt from a Romanian Newspaper. The article was written by Mr. Cornel Nistorescu. It was published under the title ‘C’ntarea Americii.’ This means ‘Ode To America.’ The publication was in the Romanian newspaper Evenimentul zilei. The paper’s names in English are The Daily Event or News of the Day.
~An Ode to America ~
Why are Americans so united? They would not resemble one another even if you painted them all one color! They speak all the languages of the world and form an astonishing mixture of civilizations and religious beliefs.
On 9/11, the American tragedy turned three hundred million people into a hand put on the heart. Nobody rushed to accuse the White House, the Army, or the Secret Service of being only a bunch of losers. Nobody rushed to empty their bank accounts. Nobody rushed out onto the streets nearby to gape and look about.
Instead, the Americans volunteered to donate blood and to give a helping hand.
After the first moments of panic, they raised their flag over the smoking ruins. They put on T-shirts, caps, and ties in the colors of the national flag. They placed flags on buildings and cars as if a government official or the president were passing by. On every occasion, they started singing: ‘God Bless America !’
I watched the live broadcast, and then the reruns—again and again. I’ll never forget the story of the man. He carried a woman in a wheelchair down a hundred floors. He didn’t know her name. He only knew that she needed help. Or the one about the California hockey player. He gave his life fighting back against the terrorists. He prevented that plane from reaching its target and saved hundreds, maybe thousands, of others.
How on earth were they capable of responding united as one human being? Imperceptibly, with every word and musical note, the memory of some turned into a modern myth of tragic heroes. With every phone call, millions of dollars were collected. These were aimed at rewarding not a man or a family, but a spirit. This spirit can’t be bought with money. What on earth unites the Americans in such a way? Their land? Their history? Their economic Power? Money? I tried for hours to find an answer, humming songs and murmuring phrases, risking the sound of being commonplace. I thought things over and reached only one conclusion. Only freedom can work such miracles.
Would this even become a remote possibility in today’s climate? More people would try to blame other Americans. Fewer people would come together to find the nurturing and recovery that came with 9/11.
USED TO THE AMERICAN SPIRIT HAD SPUNK!

It should be a place where “anyone from any corner of the Earth can come… and become an American.” He saw immigration as central to the country’s strength and spirit, a beacon of hope for those seeking freedom. Today, that vision feels distant. Under President Trump’s restrictive “no entry” policies, pathways once open to refugees were narrowed. Access for asylum seekers and many immigrants was shut entirely. The ideal Reagan championed—a door open to the world—has, for many, become a door closed.

No matter the conflict, journalists must be protected. Without them, truth fades and the most vulnerable are left unheard.
Everyone holds different views on the conflict in the Middle East. Nevertheless, we must protect those working to bring precise information to the public. These individuals must be shielded from harm. The free flow of reliable reporting is essential to preventing abuse, neglect, or the silencing of marginalized voices. Without journalists and observers on the ground, it becomes harder to find the truth. The needs of those most affected risk being ignored.
Simply calling something “FAKE NEWS” doesn’t make it so. If you believe a claim is false, be ready to show why. Cite the facts. Share credible sources. Explain your reasoning. Without that, your point won’t hold. In your own words ~ Shut The Hell Up!
