After years of enduring lousy press and negative public perception, the facility served as a much-needed fresh start. The change was palpable. Quarterly fitness tests became mandatory, along with regular firearm qualifications.

On a dark, silent night in 1980, the highways through Caddo County near the rural communities of Gracemont and Binger, Oklahoma, were deserted. Residents had long settled in their homes, leaving the quiet stretches of U.S. Highway 281 nearly void of movement. It was a time when law enforcement in rural Oklahoma had limited resources and technology, making cases like this all the more challenging to solve.

That night, an Indigenous man, Jasper Williams, had set out on foot from his home, heading south along a dirt road that eventually led to the pavement of Highway 281. It was common for community members to walk from one home to another, no matter the distance, and Jasper was going to a friend’s house. The night was pitch black, with no moonlight or streetlights to guide him, save for the faint outline of the highway stretching before him.

As Jasper walked, visibility was almost nonexistent. The road was shrouded in darkness, with no nearby lights to help him stay clear of the highway’s center. At some point, as he walked around six miles north of Gracemont—almost midway between there and Binger—tragedy struck. Jasper was hit by a passing vehicle, which left him severely injured on the side of the road. By daylight, he was found deceased, having bled to death, with no car in sight and no immediate reports of an accident.

Upon closer inspection, deputies discovered fragments of evidence scattered on Jasper’s clothing and body: broken glass, bits of chrome, a hubcap, and remnants of a car’s signal light and headlight assembly, as well as traces of paint. With these clues, investigators determined the incident might not be an ordinary accident but potentially a case of vehicular homicide.

The case was assigned as a homicide due to the absence of witnesses, the lack of any report from the driver, and the fact that the vehicle fled the scene. Caddo County Deputies Hamilton and Ware—both of whom have since passed—took on the painstaking task of finding the person responsible. Armed with the physical evidence, they began an exhaustive search of autobody shops across the county and surrounding areas, hoping to find a vehicle with damage matching the debris at the scene.

After several weeks, their search finally paid off. The deputies located a damaged vehicle that matched the evidence they’d collected. The owner was identified and subsequently interviewed, leading to the arrest of a man named Larry Johnson.

During questioning, Johnson admitted he had left a bar in Binger around 2 a.m. on the night Jasper was killed. On his drive home, he confessed to drifting in and out of sleep, initially thinking he had hit an animal, possibly a dog. However, he chose not to stop. Later, after hearing news of the fatal accident, he realized he was likely the driver involved but continued to hope he was wrong.

In a small city, one man’s election as Mayor marked a drastic turning point. Traditionally, city decisions required approval from a council of six members, with a majority vote ensuring every person wielded only a little power. But soon after taking office, the Mayor and his political allies on the council pushed through changes that redefined his role. They granted him unprecedented authority to make sweeping decisions for the city and its residents, bypassing the usual oversight.

But that initial optimism soon eroded, giving way to a profound sense of disappointment and betrayal. The Mayor began filling oversight boards and committees with his chosen people—none of whom had relevant experience. They promised to “clean house” and end wasteful spending, but their true motives quickly surfaced.

The Commissioner of Streets and Lights, handpicked by the Mayor, promptly fired the street crew and supervisors, many of whom had worked for the city for over fifteen years and were approaching retirement. The Commissioner hired the Mayor’s son’s paving company in their place, and he also contracted two out-of-town electricians for lighting maintenance. These new hires lacked the skills to handle the city’s infrastructure needs, but the Mayor’s orders were clear. The supposed “savings” were diverted into three hidden accounts linked to companies the Mayor quietly operated on the side.

The Mayor restructured Water and Trash Services similarly. Water management was outsourced to a neighboring town with little regard for the community’s best interests. Trash collection was reduced to once a week, and a company from two towns away was hired, offering only minimal service. The Mayor’s promised savings got funneled into an account controlled solely by the Mayor.

Every city department followed the same grim trajectory. Once-dedicated employees were let go and replaced by disinterested newcomers complaining about their low wages and minimal benefits. City services deteriorated rapidly, with potholes on the streets, frequent power outages, and overflowing trash bins, leaving residents dismayed as their quality of life declined.

The townspeople soon noticed their bills creeping upward—first by ten dollars, then by thirty, with no explanation or improvement in service. This financial strain, coupled with crumbling city infrastructure, directly resulted from the Mayor’s unchecked power and self-serving decisions, placing a heavy burden and stress on the residents.

Residents registered with the opposing political party received letters citing dubious code violations and demanding fines. Those who contested were slapped with even more violations, driving many to leave the city altogether. Once most of his opposition had been driven out, the Mayor enacted a new ordinance requiring his remaining supporters to pay a “privilege to live here” fee. When citizens objected, he sent his security force to arrest vocal dissenters, warning others of eviction if they did not comply.

The Mayor’s reign of intimidation didn’t stop there. He established a “Mayor’s Court,” where anyone accused of a crime—even minor infractions—was jailed indefinitely. Their families could “buy” their release, but only at exorbitant prices, often reaching hundreds of thousands of dollars. The city had become a prison, and its leader was a dictator.

Many residents clung to the hope that this nightmare would end with the Mayor’s death. But when he passed away, the townspeople were horrified to learn that city law now dictated his son would inherit his office.

This tale serves as a stark warning: when voting, beware of who you trust with power. Sometimes, that choice can cost more than you ever imagined.

Nearly half of Americans who cast ballots in the November 5, 2024, Presidential Election voted for Kamala Harris; the other half for Donald Trump.

At this stage, it’s less about who supported whom and more about what lies ahead. If Trump follows through on his campaign promises, there could be significant changes in government agencies, which might affect the benefits that many Americans depend on. He has openly vowed to bring retribution against those he views as adversaries—potentially including the half of the nation that didn’t vote for him. However, it’s also important to note that not all of his promises may come to fruition, and the political system has checks and balances to prevent extreme actions.

Federal law enforcement agencies involved in national security and other branches focused on homeland security could be dissolved. Trump has publicly stated his intent to dismantle these institutions.

Social programs for adults, older people, and those with disabilities—such as food assistance, school aid, healthcare, and Social Security—are likely to face drastic cuts, potentially leaving them virtually ineffective for those in need. He has said as much.

LGBTQI+ rights and protections are also under threat, as outlined in Project 2025, a policy initiative he supports. If you think this won’t materialize, consider the promises already laid out. The next four years will show us the reality.

If Trump appoints Robert Kennedy Jr. to oversee public health, as he has suggested, food and drug safety regulations could be gutted. Protections that ensure safe food, medications, and clean drinking water could be stripped away, leading to significant health risks.

Trump is likely to have the backing of a Republican-controlled House and Senate. New laws and repeals may come as swiftly and forcefully as debris in a tornado. The U.S. could change drastically, and not only non-supporters would feel the impact—Trump supporters, too, could face serious, unforeseen consequences.

Expect an economic downturn as average Americans encounter hardships unprecedented in recent history. As with the COVID-19 crisis, another wave of upheaval may follow. Trump’s track record shows a tendency for crises, particularly in ventures he leads. The economic future under his leadership looks bleak.

What You Can Do

HOARD – Stock up on canned goods and cash reserves outside traditional banking institutions. Prepare for potential utility outages and find ways to stay connected without reliance on cell phones or computers. Secure a supply of both drinking and non-drinking water to meet various needs.

PROTECT – Prioritize security measures for yourself, your home, and your property, particularly those independent of electricity. Stock up on self-defense tools like bear spray or mace. Ensure that your home’s locks are strong both inside and out. In the event of an intruder, remember: in a fight for survival, any measure is justifiable. There are no rules when fighting for your life. Anything is fair!

These are just a few preparations to consider. With the current political landscape in both Houses and the Supreme Court tilted in Trump’s favor, our democratic processes could be at risk. This election may mark our last chance to elect our President—and our future as a democracy. It’s critical to stay informed, engage in the political process, and support organizations that defend democratic values. Together, we can make a difference.

I want to delve into the Border Issue, a topic that often dominates national news and political discussions. As a resident of Mesa, Arizona, and a frequent traveler across the state, I’ve never encountered the dramatic scenes that the media often depicts. There have been no families from Central America camping in my front yard or streams of people crossing into nearby towns. Despite these personal accounts, the news continues to show what’s framed as thousands of people crossing the border here in Arizona. It raises questions: where are these images and reports coming from, and are they truly reflective of the situation here?

“I don’t think Jared meant that,”

he replied, genuinely thoughtfully. –––

“When I say ‘greatness,’ I’m not talking about racism or inequality. I’m talking about hard work, pride, patriotism—things that feel like they’re slipping away.”

Naomi nodded understanding, fostering a sense of mutual respect and value for each other’s perspectives, highlighting the importance of open and respectful dialogue in the community.

“But the word again implies that we want to go backward,”

“And, for me, that’s concerning. I love this country and respect what’s gone into making it better. I mean, we have interracial marriage, legal protections for LGBTQ+ people, voting rights for everyone.”

––– Lena paused, looking at Jared.

“To me, that’s American greatness—now.”

As the meeting unfolded, the debate deepened. Various members shared stories of progress and hardships. Kayla, a small business owner, spoke about her pride in balancing work and motherhood.

“When I hear traditional values, I think of something different than my grandmother might have,”

“Maybe we can remember this—our vision of a truly great America embraces both the good of the past and the advancements we’ve made. To build greatness, we don’t go backward. We keep moving and evolving, ensuring that each generation has the opportunity to contribute to a better America, instilling a sense of hope and optimism in the audience for the future.”

The room echoed with nods of agreement, and as the townspeople filed out, they carried forward a renewed understanding: that the road to greatness was not paved with nostalgia alone but with a willingness to grow beyond it.

The term “Make America Great Again” has a different meaning, and it stands on the grounds that to make America Great Again, there has to be the revoking of rights that have been attained by groups over the last fifty years. Those groups include blacks, Native Americans, Hispanics, Asians, the LGBTQI+ Community, and others. Because of that angle, this space will discuss the topic in the November 1st, 2024 posting.

Understanding the range of meanings attributed to “Make America Great Again” offers insight into the complexities of contemporary American identity and the societal debate over what “greatness” truly entails in an evolving multicultural landscape.

What to Expect if Authoritarianism Takes Over in 2025

If you wake up one morning and it gets decided that the far right movement has successfully won up and down the ballot the offices that will allow them control of the Senate, House, and Presidency, what happens on January 21st when the President takes office? The other’s take will have taken office on January 3rd, 2025.

If a far-right, authoritarian shift happened, imagine daily life feeling tense and disorienting. Freedom of speech and privacy might tighten, and communities could fracture over polarized beliefs.

Social media would likely be more censored, making it hard to know what’s happening.

For those in creative fields, such as storytelling and journalism, the potential for self-censorship is a real concern. Themes might be subtly altered, as work reflecting dissent or critique could become risky.

Public spaces and services would not be immune to the influence of a far-right, authoritarian shift. Schools, healthcare, and public safety could all be shaped by this new ideology, affecting the way history is taught, access to healthcare, and what behavior is punished or protected.

Law enforcement could face a mix of skepticism and loyalty shifts as priorities change, especially in places that once held them in high esteem.

Ultimately, a far-right, authoritarian shift could lead to a personal life that feels guarded. People might find themselves either staying under the radar or trying to navigate systems to protect themselves and their values.

It’s crucial to consider the potential influence of far-right extremism when we vote. Hopefully, there are still enough clear-minded individuals in America who can help prevent such a shift.

My dad and grandfather are gone now, but neither would support a liar, cheat, rapist, insurrectionist, dictator, or someone who supports one, or generally speaking, a creep or ‘weirdo.’ 

There are other reasons you can look at as well. For instance, a candidate such has a sexual offense judgment against him, and he is under indictment for countless federal crimes; in the last year, one of the candidates was in the air, flying, on their way to being arrested, just as much as he was campaigning at one point. 

One or more of those reasons would have been reason enough to consider looking into the person’s background. And three to four, would have been reason enough to reject a person all together. Someone who was strongly running for public office would have been rejected. Now, the GOP considers it a qualification required for all Republican candidates.

The candidates have endorsements from KKK members. They boast about, a presidential politician having endorsements from dictators. They wallow in such markings, and candidates publicly brag about laws they will violate first, if elected. And this makes them the most qualified candidate. Going as far as boasting about becoming a dictator. Going about telling people this is the last election they will have to worry about voting in. 

Why? Does that mean the Constitution is going to get ripped apart, shredded, and there will no longer be a United States where the people choose its leaders? It appears it doesn’t matter to the people who are numb and following this character. They appear to have zoned out of reality. 

My grandfather, father, uncles, aunts, and even a few dogs and horses I’ve had would not have allowed the goings on to persist. The greatest generation has died chiefly off; fewer of them now than ever are living, which sadly shows in our world. They were the ones who knew what happens when the world that falls to fascism. When reality hits and the world dies. It is beginning as America will turn grey; it will become a black-and-white construct of anything anyone remembers of its being, if these destructionists are permitted to have their way with the country. We only hope enough voters come to the polls and and vote, and save our America!

My dad had a favorite saying: the older I got, the wiser he’d get. And he was right; I wish he were here to help us out of this madness!

Beginning in 1943, the War Department published a series of pamphlets for U.S. Army personnel in the European theater of World War II. Titled Army Talks, the series was designed “to help [the personnel] become better-informed men and women and therefore better soldiers.”

On March 24, 1945, the topic for the week was “FASCISM!” 

“You are away from home, separated from your families, no longer at a civilian job or at school and many of you are risking your very lives,” the pamphlet explained, “because of a thing called fascism.” But, the publication asked, what is fascism? “Fascism is not the easiest thing to identify and analyze,” it said, “nor, once in power, is it easy to destroy. It is important for our future and that of the world that as many of us as possible understand the causes and practices of fascism, in order to combat it.”

Fascism, the U.S. government document explained, –––

“is government by the few and for the few. The objective is seizure and control of the economic, political, social, and cultural life of the state.” “The people run democratic governments, but fascist governments run the people.” 

“The basic principles of democracy stand in the way of their desires; hence—democracy must go! Anyone who is not a member of their inner gang has to do what he’s told. They permit no civil liberties, no equality before the law.” “Fascism treats women as mere breeders. ‘Children, kitchen, and the church,’ was the Nazi slogan for women,” ––– the pamphlet said. 

Fascists “make their own rules and change them when they choose…. They maintain themselves in power by use of force combined with propaganda based on primitive ideas of ‘blood’ and ‘race,’ by skillful manipulation of fear and hate, and by false promise of security. The propaganda glorifies war and insists it is smart and ‘realistic’ to be pitiless and violent.” 

Fascists understood that “the fundamental principle of democracy—faith in the common sense of the common people—was the direct opposite of the fascist principle of rule by the elite few,” it explained, “[s]o they fought democracy…. They played political, religious, social, and economic groups against each other and seized power while these groups struggled.”  

Americans should not be fooled into thinking that fascism could not come to America, the pamphlet warned; after all, “[w]e once laughed Hitler off as a harmless little clown with a funny mustache.” And indeed, the U.S. had experienced “sorry instances of mob sadism, lynchings, vigilantism, terror, and suppression of civil liberties. We have had our hooded gangs, Black Legions, Silver Shirts, and racial and religious bigots. All of them, in the name of Americanism, have used undemocratic methods and doctrines which…can be properly identified as ‘fascist.’”

The War Department thought it was important for Americans to understand the tactics fascists would use to take power in the United States. They would try to gain power “under the guise of ‘super-patriotism’ and ‘super-Americanism.’” And they would use three techniques: 

First, they would pit religious, racial, and economic groups against one another to break down national unity. Part of that effort to divide and conquer would be a “well-planned ‘hate campaign’ against minority races, religions, and other groups.”

Second, they would deny any need for international cooperation, because that would fly in the face of their insistence that their supporters were better than everyone else. “In place of international cooperation, the fascists seek to substitute a perverted sort of ultra-nationalism which tells their people that they are the only people in the world who count. With this goes hatred and suspicion toward the people of all other nations.” 

Third, fascists would insist that “the world has but two choices—either fascism or communism, and they label as ‘communists’ everyone who refuses to support them.”

It is “vitally important” to learn to spot native fascists, the government said, “even though they adopt names and slogans with popular appeal, drape themselves with the American flag, and attempt to carry out their program in the name of the democracy they are trying to destroy.” 

The only way to stop the rise of fascism in the United States, the document said, “is by making our democracy work and by actively cooperating to preserve world peace and security.” In the midst of the insecurity of the modern world, the hatred at the root of fascism “fulfills a triple mission.” By dividing people, it weakens democracy. “By getting men to hate rather than to think,” it prevents them “from seeking the real cause and a democratic solution to the problem.” By falsely promising prosperity, it lures people to embrace its security.

 “Fascism thrives on indifference and ignorance,” it warned. Freedom requires “being alert and on guard against the infringement not only of our own freedom but the freedom of every American. If we permit discrimination, prejudice, or hate to rob anyone of his democratic rights, our own freedom and all democracy is threatened.”

It was a quiet Sunday morning. A knock came at the door as the man leafed through the morning paper. He answered it, and there stood a stranger, looking road-worn but determined. ––––

“Is this where Benjamin Groff lives?”

the stranger asked.

“Yes, it is,”

the man replied, studying the stranger’s face.

“You must be his father,”

the stranger ventured his smile kind and knowing.

“Yes, I am,”

the man replied, both curious and wary.

The stranger introduced himself.

“My name is Samuel Johnson. I’ve driven over seventy miles to meet you, sir. You must have been one remarkable man to raise a son like Benjamin.”

The father, his heart swelling with pride, felt a mix of emotions.

“Thank you, Samuel,”

he said.

“But, please, how do you know my son?”

Samuel nodded as though expecting the question.

“I met Ben at the Oklahoma State Fair last fall. I was just there to do a job—keeping an eye on one of the old buildings. Some local boys had been giving me trouble, but Ben stepped in. Out of all the things he could have done at the fair, he chose to sit down and talk with me. We spoke for hours. Your son has a way of making people feel seen, of looking out for folks. He even asked me if anyone was bothering me, and from that moment on, I felt I wasn’t just working the fair—I was spending time with a friend.”

The father listened, deeply touched.

“That sounds like Ben,”

he said softly, gesturing for Samuel to take a seat.

“Let me wake him—he’ll want to know you’re here.”

Ben’s father went to his son’s room and gently shook him awake.

“Ben, you’ll never guess who’s here to see you,”

he said.

Still half-asleep, Ben slowly got up and followed his father into the living room. To his surprise, there sat Samuel, his old buddy from the State Fair. A smile of joy spread across Ben’s face as memories flooded back.

On that day at the fair, Ben had already taken in the sights, ridden the rides, and wandered through the livestock shows, which, to his surprise, had lost their charm despite his upbringing on a farm. He was winding down, simply walking, when he happened upon Samuel’s post.

Samuel was friendly, the kind of person who seemed to carry his life’s story in the lines of his face. Ben had sensed the man’s kindness right away, trusting him instinctively. They talked for hours, sharing stories. Samuel had offered him cold water from the employee stash and even let him use the private restroom in the back, which felt like a luxury compared to the crowded ones across the fairgrounds. Ben could still recall their easy camaraderie, even though much of what they’d discussed had faded over time.

Before parting, Ben had written down his number and directions to their home, saying,

“If you’re ever in town and need anything, look us up.”

Now, here was Samuel, having made good on that invitation.

After they caught up for a while, Ben suggested a tour of the campground where his father worked as a Ranger. The sprawling property had over 350 acres, six cabins, and a large recreation hall. “I’d better head back to the city,”

he said, patting Ben on the shoulder.

“I’m grateful to have met your folks and seen your home—it’s even better than I’d imagined.”

He climbed into his Lincoln Continental, waved as he pulled away, and drove down the dusty road until he was out of sight. That was the last time Ben saw Samuel. But in the years that followed, he often recalled the kindness they’d shared, proof that a simple act of friendship could reach far beyond the boundaries of a single day.

The soldiers stationed at the forts in Arizona and New Mexico were initially skeptical. One of the few camel drivers whose name survives was Hi Jolly. He lived out his life in the United States. After his death in 1902, he was buried in Quartzsite, Arizona. His grave is marked by a pyramid-shaped monument topped with a metal profile of a camel.

Benjamin Harrison Groff stood at the edge of his farmland west of Eakly, on Cobb Creek in Caddo County, Oklahoma, his weathered hands resting on his hips as he surveyed the fields. The sun was setting behind the Oklahoma hills, casting a golden hue over the land he’d come to love and toil. It was 1930, and though the country was heading into hard times, B.H. Groff had built a life here, one of stability and quiet perseverance.

He was 38 years old, married to Florence, and father to three children—Bennie, Dorothy, and JD. His modest but sturdy house had been their home for as long as he could remember. Its value was $3500, and though it wasn’t much compared to the sprawling estates some wealthier landowners had, it was theirs. They had a lodger, Lex Long, a 22-year-old man who had come to stay a while back. The Groffs didn’t need the money, but Lex had been good company with the world the way it was; having an extra hand around never hurt.

Farming had been the family’s lifeblood; Ulrich Groff is a name well known around Olney, Illinois, as the man who, along with his sons, built a barn without any metal, using only wood. The census taker had come by not too long ago, scribbling down notes as B.H. answered the questions. He had explained that, while still farming, he had recently taken on a new role as an employer, overseeing other farms and workers. The long days of breaking his back were coming to an end. He felt more like a foreman now, guiding others and ensuring the crops were harvested on time. This transition was not just a change in his work but a step towards providing more stability for his family and the families of his workers.
