The Coffee Pot Carries More Than Coffee
Part Five
The old coffee pot had learned something over the years.
People rarely came to it because they needed coffee.
They came because they needed a moment.
Morning after morning, the familiar aroma filled the kitchen, and before the first cup was poured, someone would sigh.
Sometimes it was the sigh of a father wondering how he would pay the bills.
Sometimes it belonged to a mother carrying worries she never spoke aloud.
Sometimes it came from a young couple dreaming about a future they hoped would be better than yesterday.
The coffee pot listened.
It had no answers.
No opinions.
No judgment.
Only warmth.
It noticed something curious.
When people sat together with a warm cup in their hands, the burdens they carried somehow became lighter.
Problems didn’t always disappear.
But they no longer had to be carried alone.
The coffee pot had witnessed difficult conversations.
News of a lost job.
A frightening diagnosis.
Children leaving home.
The empty chair that no one was ready to remove.
Yet it had also witnessed hope.
A neighbor dropping by to check in.
A friend arriving unannounced with a pie tucked under one arm.
Laughter returning after tears.
Life beginning again when no one thought it could.
The coffee pot realized that its greatest purpose had never been making coffee.
Its purpose was bringing people close enough to remind one another they were not alone.
Perhaps that’s why coffee has always tasted a little better when it is shared.
Not because of the beans.
Not because of the cream.
But because someone cared enough to sit down and stay awhile.
Tomorrow morning, before you hurry off into another busy day, invite someone to share a cup with you.
The conversation may be remembered long after the coffee has gone cold.
