A UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh physician was fatally stabbed and his wife critically injured when they were attacked while sleeping in their Edgewood home early Thursday, police said.
UPMC identified the slain doctor as 46-year-old Dr. Idris Evans, co-medical director of the Pediatric Transport Team at Children’s and a University of Pittsburgh professor. Police arrested Elijah Hemingway, 32, of Pittsburgh’s Hazelwood neighborhood in connection with the slaying, which took place around 12:30 a.m. on Linden Avenue.
“It was a violent scene,” Allegheny County Police Assistant Superintendent Victor Joseph said during a news conference. “The bedroom furniture, mirrors broken; it was a very graphic scene.”

DICKSON COUNTY, Tenn. (WMC/Gray News) – A Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper returning from training was involved in a crash with a driver going the wrong way on the interstate Thursday.
According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Sgt. Goddard of the Memphis District was returning from a training session in Nashville when he encountered the driver on Interstate 40 in Dickson County.
Dashcam footage of the crash shows the other car barreling toward Goddard in the far-left lane of the interstate. Goddard appears to swerve to the left, narrowly avoiding hitting the car head-on. Read more at AZFAMILY.com

An off-duty Logan County Sheriff’s Deputy was injured Wednesday afternoon after accidentally shooting himself in the leg.
Bellefontaine Police were called shortly before 4:00 PM after the deputy reported that he had accidentally shot himself.
Officers found him seated on the front porch of a home in Bellefontaine with a tourniquet applied to his upper right thigh.
Police observed an entry wound above his right knee and an exit wound several inches below it.
There was no active bleeding when officers arrived.
The deputy told police he believed he had unloaded his Glock 26 nine-millimeter handgun and then attempted to dry-fire the weapon, but the gun discharged. Continue reading here…
The attack happened inside the facility as the deputy was working, according to the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials stated the deputy was taken to a hospital, where medical staff treated him for a broken jaw and a concussion.

A Denver Police Department motorcycle officer was seriously injured in a Thursday evening crash.

Police Officer Is Critically Wounded in Shooting Near Ontario Synagogue
A gunman opened fire near the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville as congregants gathered for Yom Kippur, the authorities said.
A man with a shotgun shot and critically wounded a police officer stationed outside a synagogue in Ontario on Sunday, the Canadian authorities said, as congregants gathered for Yom Kippur, the holiest day on the Jewish calendar.
The officer managed to return fire, and another officer also discharged a gun, Kristy Denette, a spokeswoman with the Special Investigations Unit, the province’s police watchdog, told reporters on Monday. The first officer, identified as Constable Jeff Smith, was in stable condition, Ms. Denette said.

Detroit Police officer injured in chase of suspect in truck with stolen plants
At 1:40 a.m. police were dispatched to English Gardens, 22501 Kelly at Nine Mile Road on the report of a man stealing plants and shrubs from the courtyard. The suspect fled once police approached, leading to one of the officers being injured by the trailer that the man’s truck was using. See report here…
PPB Officers Injured During Camp Clean-Up in Old Town
On Thursday, September 24, 2026, at approximately 10:00 a.m., officers assigned to the Portland Police Bureau’s Central Precinct Neighborhood Response Team (NRT) were deployed to the area of Northwest Flanders Street and Northwest 5th Avenue to assist Portland Solutions and other partners with a camp clean-up. During this coordinated operation, an adult male whose camp was being cleaned up became combative and he subsequently assaulted two PPB officers. After the suspect was taken into custody, the officers were transported to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Additionally, the suspect was also transported to a hospital for evaluation of self-inflicted injuries sustained after his arrest.
“First and foremost, I’m relieved to know both of our officers are going to be okay. They were doing their jobs and unfortunately, they were injured in the process,” Chief Bob Day said. “This incident is another reminder that police officers can face unexpected dangers at any time. I’m grateful for the care they received from hospital staff and for the officers and personnel who immediately stepped in to support their colleagues.” Read more at portland.gov
3 Firefighters Injured Battling Somerville House Fire
SOMERVILLE, MA — Three firefighters were injured while battling a three-alarm fire at a vacant home in Somerville Thursday morning.
Crews responded to the fire at approximately 6:30 a.m. at 8-10 Park St. Heavy smoke and flames rose from the roof of the house as firefighters worked to contain the blaze.
Arriving fire companies encountered heavy fire conditions in the basement and all three upper floors of the house, which had been vacant for some time. The fire eventually burned through the roof, which collapsed. Firefighters were forced to evacuate the building when conditions became too unsafe to continue operating inside and extinguished the fire from the exterior using multiple hose lines and aerial ladders. City officials told Patch that the majority of the fire had been knocked down within two hours.
MORRIS HEIGHTS, The Bronx (WABC) — A fire at an apartment building in the Bronx left one man dead, 10 others injured, including firefighters, and displaced dozens of residents Wednesday morning.
The fire broke out at around 7:45 a.m. on Montgomery Avenue, between 174th and 175th streets in the Morris Heights section.

Seattle Fire Department crews responded to a residence along Sand Point Way NE just before 3 a.m. Thursday.
One building occupant, a man in his 50s, was reportedly treated and taken to Harborview Medical Center in stable condition.
SFD shared that during the firefight, there was a “partial collapse of an exterior structure,” reported as a deck.

PROSPECT, Robeson County — Two firefighters were hurt while battling a large wildfire in Robeson County Monday.
The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office said the fire burned more than 150 acres along McMillan Road.
The firefighters are with the Prospect Volunteer Fire Department, according to The Robesonian.
The newspaper reports both firefighters were airlifted to a hospital in Chapel Hill.

Texas Police Officer Critically Injured in Crash During Motorcycle Chase
A Roanoke police officer was critically injured after a motorcycle pursuit ended in a crash involving another vehicle, while the fleeing rider was hospitalized and taken into custody.

ELK MOUND, Wis. (WEAU) – A state trooper has been injured this morning near Elk Mound, according to Dunn County Sheriff Kevin Bygd.
The crash was around 5:00 on Monday morning. It was in the westbound lane of I-94 near Elk Mound.

LOUISA COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Two firefighters were hospitalized after a single-vehicle accident overturned their fire truck in Louisa County on Saturday afternoon.
On Saturday, Sept. 19, Louisa County said in a post that a Louisa Fire Department fire truck from the Trevillians Fire Station was involved in a single-vehicle accident on Oakland Road while the crew was responding to a vehicle fire.
The fire engine was driving south on Oakland Road near Louisa Road when it ran off the right side of the road, Virginia State Police said in a release on Sunday, Sept. 20. Police said the driver overcorrected, which caused the truck to cross the road, enter a yard, overturn and come to rest upright.
