The Bread Box Wonders Where Everyone Went
The chairs are still there.

The table is still there.
Even the old clock still keeps time.
But the laughter…
The laughter doesn’t visit much anymore.
The bread box has watched generations pass through this kitchen.
Little hands once reached for fresh slices before racing outside to play.
Teenagers hurried in, grabbed a sandwich, and disappeared through the back door.
Parents lingered over another cup of coffee after supper, talking about tomorrow as if tomorrow would always arrive.
Now the kitchen is quieter.
The bread still comes.
The coffee still brews.
The refrigerator still hums.
But too often, everyone is somewhere else.
One sits in the living room with a television.
Another disappears behind a phone.
Someone else eats alone on the way to the next appointment.
The bread box doesn’t blame anyone.
It knows life became busier.
It understands responsibilities.
It simply misses the moments when people gathered without needing a reason.
It remembers when the kitchen wasn’t just where meals were prepared.
It was where lives were shared.
Perhaps homes aren’t measured by the size of the rooms.
Perhaps they’re measured by the number of conversations that fill them.
The bread box waits quietly.
Not because it expects yesterday to return.
But because it still believes that someday…
Someone will pull out a chair,
cut another slice of bread,
and stay awhile.
