Day Seven

The Bread Box Waits

Morning sunlight slips through the kitchen window.

It lands on the old bread box just as it has for decades.

Dust dances in the light.

The kitchen is quiet.

The clock still ticks.

The chairs still stand around the table.

The bread box has watched children become parents.

Parents become grandparents.

Families move away.

New families arrive.

Recipes change.

Loaves change.

Homes change.

Time changes everything.

Except one thing.

Hope.

The bread box has learned that every family who ever placed it on their counter believed in tomorrow.

They bought bread expecting another meal.

Another breakfast.

Another supper.

Another ordinary day together.

Hope was never stored inside the bread box.

It was carried home with every loaf.

So the bread box waits.

Not because it expects yesterday to return.

Yesterday belongs where memories belong.

Instead…

it waits for tomorrow.

Perhaps a grandchild will ask to learn Grandma’s bread recipe.

Perhaps neighbors will linger over coffee.

Perhaps someone will put away their phone and stay at the table a little longer.

Perhaps a family will discover that the best conversations still happen where crumbs collect.

The bread box knows something people sometimes forget.

Homes are not built by walls.

They are built by moments.

And moments can begin again…

with something as ordinary as sharing a slice of bread.

The bread box has never lost faith in people.

It simply waits for them to remember.
