The Old Pickup — Day Three

The Old Pickup Knows Every Back Road

Theme: Sometimes the best journeys were never found on the highway.

The old pickup never cared much for the interstate.

Those roads were too fast.

Sometimes the best journeys were never found on the highway.

Too loud.
Everyone seemed to be in a hurry to arrive somewhere without noticing where they had been.

It always preferred the gravel roads.

The ones where dust drifted behind the tires like a memory reluctant to disappear.

It remembers every one of them.

The road that led to Grandpa’s farm.

The shortcut across the section line where children counted cattle instead of billboards.

The creek crossing that flooded every spring.

The hill where young couples parked beneath a sky full of stars before anyone thought to photograph every moment.

The pickup knows those roads by heart.

Not because they were easier.

Because they mattered.

It carried families to church suppers.

It hauled Christmas trees home tied together with old baling twine.

It bounced across fields bringing sandwiches to men working long after the sun had climbed overhead.

Sometimes it carried neighbors who had broken down.

Sometimes it brought someone home after the worst day of their life.

It never asked why.

It simply went where it was needed.

Back roads never promised speed.

They promised something different.

Conversations.

Laughter.

Silence shared between people who already understood one another.

No one stared into a screen.

There wasn’t one.

The scenery outside the window was enough.

The pickup has noticed something.

People still travel.

Perhaps farther than ever before.

But they seldom wander.

Every destination is mapped.

Every minute calculated.

Every delay considered an inconvenience.

Few people simply drive to see what they might discover.

The pickup misses that.

Because life has always revealed its greatest treasures just beyond the road no one planned to take.

Perhaps that is true for people as well.

Not every worthwhile journey is the quickest one.

Sometimes the roads that leave the most dust on our shoes also leave the deepest memories in our hearts.

The old pickup knows that.

After all…

It has never forgotten a single back road.

Closing Thought

The highways may shorten the trip.

But the back roads often lengthen the memories.

Look around your home. Every ordinary thing has a story. Sometimes, it’s really about us.

I felt such peace reading this and wishing I was in this old pick up on a country road taking it all in. I’ve only had a few experiences like this in all of my years. I’m a suburban girl living outside of NYC. I just love reading and hearing about the roads this truck may have driven on.

    Thank you! 😊

What you leave today becomes someone’s answer tomorrow.
