Morning Coffee —The Days Don’t Have To BE Remarkable

Most of life is not made up of remarkable days. It is built from quiet mornings, familiar routines, simple kindness, and ordinary moments we may not realize are precious until much later. September 2 is a reminder to notice them while they are still here.

Good morning.

Pour yourself a cup and stay with me for a few minutes.

There is something rather ordinary about the second day of a month.

The first day gets all the attention.

September 1 arrives with a fresh page on the calendar. We talk about a new month, new beginnings, changing seasons, and all the things we hope to accomplish before another thirty days slip away.

Then September 2 shows up.

No fanfare.

No ribbon cutting.

Just another morning.

And maybe that is exactly why I like it.

Most of our lives are not lived on the first day of something.

They are lived on the second day.

And the third.

And the seventeenth.

They are lived on Tuesday mornings when the coffee tastes particularly good, when the dog wants outside five minutes after you sat down, when the laundry needs folding, the bills need paying, and somebody you care about sends you a message simply asking how you are doing.

Those are the days that eventually become a life.

We sometimes convince ourselves that a day must contain something important before it deserves to be remembered. A birthday. A wedding. A vacation. A promotion. Some great accomplishment.

But think about the memories you treasure most.

Chances are many of them began with absolutely nothing remarkable happening.

Someone sitting across the kitchen table.

A parent standing at the stove.

A friend stopping by unexpectedly.

A long conversation on the porch.

A familiar song playing from another room.

A cup of coffee shared before the rest of the world woke up.

At the time, nobody announced, “Pay attention. You’re going to miss this someday.”

We simply lived it.

Only later did we discover how valuable those ordinary moments had become.

Perhaps that is the lesson hiding inside September 2.

You do not have to accomplish something extraordinary today.

You do not have to change the world before supper.

You do not have to solve every problem that followed you into this morning.

Sometimes a successful day is much simpler.

Drink the coffee while it is warm.

Tell somebody you love them.

Laugh when the opportunity presents itself.

Notice the person who needs a little kindness.

Finish one thing you have been putting off.

And when evening comes, be thankful you were given another ordinary day in which to live.

Because someday, looking backward, you may discover there was nothing ordinary about it at all.

So here’s to September 2.

No parade.

No grand announcement.

Just another cup of coffee, another sunrise, and another opportunity to add one small piece to the story of our lives.

And sometimes, that is more than enough.

Have a great day from benandsteve.com, and remember—

Life is rarely built from the remarkable moments. It is built from the ordinary ones we were wise enough to notice.
